Thanks to jez for pointing out DOT - one of a few graph layout tools bundled as GraphViz. Comes out of AT&T's research labs.

There is also a native Mac OS X implementation.

I wrote an XSLt stylesheet to transform our process definition file into DOT format. The result is one process diagram per process or subprocess with links between them. Very cool. Now if only there was decent SVG support in IE and Safari.
