Joel Spolsky came to Amazon today to speak about what separates successful or what he terms 'blue chip' products from off brand products. He listed three points: make people happy, think about emotions, and obsess over aesthetics.

All in all was a very enjoyable speech. He even managed to tie in his obsession with Brad and Jennifer's split and offer some dating advice while defining 'misattribution'.

Apparently a coffee date is a better choice than a bar date because the caffeine will raise her heart rate and she'll associate that with you and not the coffee thereby concluding she is in love. But then, if you've been on as many bad first dates as I have, I'd save the coffee date for the second date so you can make sure you like her before she latches on.
